Set in the mediaeval town of Bagno Vignoni, off the Cassia, Osteria del Leone
is one of the oldest established restaurants in southern Tuscany.
Bagno Vignoni, situated 6 km south east of San Quirico d’Orcia, is
a small sulphuric thermal village used by the Roman army as a rehabilitation
and resting stop on return from battles before re-entering Rome. Over the
years pilgrims travelling to and from Rome have used it as a resting place
of which Osteria del Leone was their “inn and watering hole”.
The village of Bagno Vignoni, and its Roman pool in the centre, were reconstructed
by the Florentine Sovereignty under the Medici family during the Renaissance
period and were used by Caterina di Siena who enjoyed sulphur cures.
The source of the spring, which is visible, originates from the main pool
that bubbles up at 51 degrees.
Scenes of the pool and its effects during the winter were filmed by Tarkovsky
in Nostalgia.
Osteria del Leone, a typical historic Tuscan country style restaurant with typical
large chestnut wooden beams and dark red terracotta floors, has 3 small
rooms with 3 to 4 tables in each room, allowing for private meetings as
well as romantic dinners.
The private garden surrounded by terracotta pots & vases
with blooming flowers is well shaded during the summer days and candle
lit during the evening with fire lit torches and candles creating a tranquil
and elegant atmosphere.
The garden has become popular due to its unique
ambiance and food and therefore we recommend bookings to avoid disappointment.
The
kitchen, run by a young and renowned Tuscan Chef Andrea Bazzani, has created
a style of local traditional “farmers” recipes combined with
the more rich “Noble” dishes which were served to the Florentine
families during the Renaissance era.
Our menu is very seasonally based and changes on a regular basis providing
constant fresh and real tastes of products which have been forgotten.
We serve Crostini al Pomodoro (grilled bread with sliced fresh tomatoes
and extra virgin olive oil) during the summer when tomatoes are at itsbest and white and black Truffles or Porcini Mushrooms when in season only.
Our game, meat, vegetable and fruit suppliers are all local and most of
the production is Tuscan farmed however our White and Black Truffle supplier
remains our secret.
